Sample University Climbing Course Package

 

Day One: Travel Day

-         Students fly into Monterrey International Airport by 2:00 pm. Load up and travel by van to La Posada at El Potrero Chico

-         Students and instructors gather for introductions and orientation meeting

-         Set up camp and issue rental gear

-         Cook dinner and settle in for the evening

 

Day Two: Climbing

 Breakfast: Corn tortillas filled with scrambled eggs, avocado, tomato, and melted cheese. Local fresh fruits and breakfast cereals.

-         Hike to the crag (20 minutes)

-         Create helmet zone

-         Introduce helmets and harnesses

-         Knots class

-         Belay demo

-         Climbing movement demo

-         Care of equipment class

-         Climbing/belaying (instructors coach students’ movement on rock and belaying technique)

 Lunch:  PB&J or tuna sandwiches, fruit (bananas, mangos, oranges), assorted Mexican cookies, and chocolate empañadas.

-         Climbing

-         Pull ropes

-         Instructor role-models “Safety debrief.” (On future days this responsibility will be passed to a student.)

-         Hike to camp

 Dinner:  Grilled chicken or veggie fajitas.

-         Evening expectations discussion

 

Day Three: Climbing

-         Breakfast

-         Hike to the crag (20 minutes)

-         Morning class about sport climbing and bolting: How, Why, What, and Where? (30 minutes)

-         Climbing (lots of time for coaching and improving movement and technique)

-         Students encouraged to be “checked off” to belay w/out back-up belayer

-         Pull ropes

-         Rope coiling class & time to practice coils

-         Safety debrief by a student

-         Hike to camp

-         Dinner

 

Day Four: Climbing

-         Breakfast

-         Hike to crag (20 minutes)

-         Building & cleaning anchors class (practice stations set up at ground-level for student use throughout the day)

-         Climbing

-         Rappelling demo & practice

-         Climbing

-         Safety debrief by a student

-         Hike to camp

-         Dinner

-         Meeting to talk about the next day’s road trip

 

Day Five: Rest day/Cultural road trip:  Hot Springs and Asada (Mexican BBQ)

-         Breakfast

-         Pack daypacks and put on flip-flops

-         Take a scenic drive through Old Mexico:  visit old ruins and small villages

-         Soak in the hot springs / read a book in the shade

-         Class on the history of Nuevo Leon

-         Students check in with advisors about goals

-         Sunset BBQ

-         Return to La Posada

 

Day Six: The group splits up:  Mock-Leading and Multi-Pitching

-         Breakfast

-         Multi-pitch demo

-         Half the group goes to the crag for a lead-climbing demo, anchor-cleaning demo, and Geological History of El Potrero class

-         Half the group goes multi-pitching in parties of 3 (1 Instructor/2 students)

-         The whole group meets at camp for safety debrief and dinner

 

Day Seven: Mock-Leading and Multi-Pitching

-         Breakfast

-         Half the group goes to the crag for a lead climbing demo, anchor cleaning demo, and Geological History of El Potrero class

-         Half the group goes multi-pitching in parties of 3 (1 Instructor/2 students)

-         The whole group meets at camp for safety debrief and dinner

 

Day Eight: Mock-leading & Leading/Multi-pitching

-         Breakfast

-         Half the group goes to the crag to practice mock-leading & leading, anchor cleaning, and Desert Adaptations class

-         Half the group goes multi-pitching in parties of 3 (1 Instructor/2 students)

-         The whole group meets at camp for safety debrief and dinner

 

Day Nine: Cave Trip

-         Breakfast

-         Pack day packs and headlamps

-         Drive to cave

-         Speleology class:  formation identification, caving skills, cave LNT, and caving safety

-         Go Deeeeeeeep!

-         Return to camp

-         Dinner & Advisor/Advisee check-in

 

Day Ten: Cragging/Multi-pitching

-         Breakfast

-         Half the group goes to the crag to practice mock-leading & leading, anchor cleaning, and have a Desert Adaptations class

-         Half the group goes multi-pitching in parties of 3 (1 Instructor/2 students)

-         The whole group meets at camp for safety debrief and dinner

 

Day Eleven: Cragging

-         Breakfast

-         Hike to crag

-         Climbing/Practice skills

-         Advisor/Advisee check-in at the crag

-         Dinner at La Posada Restaurant to celebrate a successful trip!!!

 

Day Twelve: Travel Day

-         Breakfast

-         Break down camp

-         Van ride to the airport

 

 

Other Options Include:

 

More multi-pitch climbing at a higher guide to student ratio. This course in designed for groups with more experience and  less time to spend learning with our guides in Mexico.

     

Rest days in Monterrey can offer a more cultural experience than a day at the hot spring. One of our guides will escort your group via bus and subway to different museums and historical sites, and shopping districts in Monterrey Mexico.  Only safe locations are selected for this outing.
