How to get there

El Potrero Chico is located in the town of Hidalgo, state of Nuevo Leon, thirty five minutes north of Monterrey (the industrial capital of Mexico), two and a half hours from the border of Laredo Texas, seven hours from Austin,TX.

Do not cunfuse it with the town of Sabinas Hidalgo, also north of Monterrey.

There are different ways to get to El Potrero Chico:

By Car

•From Laredo Texas.

•From Colombia Bridge (Solidarity Bridge).

•From Monterrey.

By car (from Laredo Texas)

After you have crossed by one of the three bridges that Laredo has (the fastest way is through Bridge II), you have to go to get your permit or visa and the car pass at the immigration offices.

After you go through Nuevo Laredo, follow the signs to Monterrey (Mexico 85). At 26 Kilometers from the border you will get to the second check point, where you will have to show the permit and your car will be checked. Then keep going in the same road and look for the signs for the toll road Mexico 85 that will be $150 pesos (Autopista Monterrey- Laredo) that you will have to pay after an hour or so once you've gotten on the toll road.

Once you have paid the toll, drive for about one more hour and look for the signs to Saltillo and get on the Periferico toll road toward Saltillo. Once you are on it, look for the signs to Monclova (Mexico 53) and get on this. Keep on this road and in about 20 minutes you will be in Hidalgo, there is a gas station and a small plaza with an old mine train at the entrance of the town.

Now you are in the best limestone rock-climbing town in Mexico, look for the signs of El Potrero Chico, and just about 1/3 of mile from the foot of the "El Toro" mountain, you will see the sign of Posada El Potrero Chico on the left side of the road.

From Colombia Bridge (Solidarity Bridge)

After you have crossed the Colombia bridge and got your permit and car pass, the best thing to do is to take the toll road from Colombia that will take you to the Laredo-Monterrey toll road (Mexico 85), and you'll be on a safe and nice highway or autopista. Once on this autopista check above for the directions posted above (from Laredo) to get to Posada El Potrero Chico. This bridge is much quieter than the Laredo's bridges.

From Monterrey

Take Mexico 53 Highway to Monclova, and in about 35 minutes you will be in Hidalgo. There is a gas station and a small plaza with an old mine train at the entrance of Hidalgo. Now follow the green signs for El Potrero Chico. Easy!

Just about 1/3 of mile from the foot of the "El Toro" mountain, you will see the sign of Posada El Potrero Chico on the left side of the road.
